ChatGPT Gets Lockdown Mode for Extra Security & Privacy

ChatGPT Gets Lockdown Mode for Extra Security & Privacy
OpenAI has launched a new sophisticated security feature for ChatGPT known as Lockdown Mode, which is intended to provide users with enhanced protection against specific cyber-attacks and data-leak threats — particularly when the AI engages with external systems and the internet.

What Is Lockdown Mode?

Lockdown Mode is an optional high-security configuration in ChatGPT that greatly limits how the system connects to outside networks and tools. Its primary objective is to mitigate the risk of prompt injection attacks — a form of attack where an individual deceives the AI into executing harmful actions or disclosing confidential information.

This mode is targeted at individuals or organizations that handle highly sensitive information — such as executives, security personnel, journalists, researchers, or enterprise users — rather than general users.

How Lockdown Mode Enhances Security

When Lockdown Mode is activated:

External Access Is Restricted

ChatGPT’s capability to interact with external systems, web browsing, live network connections, and certain integrations is either tightened or completely disabled.

Web Browsing Is Limited

Rather than having real-time internet access, browsing is confined to previously cached content — meaning ChatGPT can only present information that is already stored within its controlled system, with no live external requests. This measure helps to prevent sensitive data from exiting the secure environment.

Higher-Risk Tools Are Disabled

Certain tools and features that could be vulnerable to exploitation in attacks (such as network access or advanced functionalities) are either disabled or restricted to thwart attackers from obtaining private information.

Who Can Utilize Lockdown Mode?

At present, Lockdown Mode is initially being introduced for enterprise and specialized accounts, including:

ChatGPT Enterprise

ChatGPT Edu

ChatGPT for Healthcare

ChatGPT for Teachers

Administrators in these settings can activate Lockdown Mode and determine which applications or actions remain accessible even when the mode is in effect. OpenAI has indicated that in the upcoming months, Lockdown Mode will be further expanded.
